Summer has arrived, and it’s certainly heating up at Gallery UNO! The pace at the gallery is picking up as we present two back-to-back offerings for your delectation.

As the month progresses, the quality artwork continues to flow as we reassemble for a group exhibition with a summer vibe, perfect for those long, sunlit days. This is UNO24 SIX: “Estivo.”

Throughout UNO25 SIX will feature local painter Alicia Tolhurst Brown, whose skill in capturing the dynamism of the sea is truly astonishing—a must-see!

Alicia Tolhurst Brown - Painter
Born in Brighton, Alicia Tolhurst Brown grew up in a creative household, inspired by her grandfather’s artwork, her father’s musicianship, and her mother’s love of singing. Guided early on by art teacher Barry Hinchliff, Alicia initially pursued A-Level art before turning to photography. After earning a BA in Photography and Mixed Media from Northbrook College, she launched a successful wedding photography business alongside part-time work at a Special Educational Needs school, where she also explored collaborative community art projects.

Alicia’s creative life expanded through music, with drumming sessions led by Brighton’s Stomp members and school performances. Marriage to swing singer Laura brought Celtic instruments into their home, enriching their shared artistic world. Becoming a mother marked a turning point: Alicia stepped away from photography to focus on family, ultimately returning to painting full-time with Laura’s encouragement.

The quiet of the COVID pandemic rekindled Alicia’s bond with the ocean. She began painting Seaford Bay’s crashing waves and serene underwater landscapes, drawing influence from Ansel Adams and J.M.W. Turner. Her seascapes reflect both energetic turmoil and calm introspection.

Alongside her painting, Alicia has practiced Shindo Jinen Ryu martial arts for 45 years and taught for 30, using the discipline to recharge after studio time. Her artistic journey remains vibrant and deeply rooted in nature, movement, and imagination.
